A championship 18-hole course, Mountain Course at Angel Park is beautifully designed for challenging and fun play. The par-71 golf course is almost 7,000 yards from the back tees and incorporates elements of the natural Nevada terrain with desert ravines, uphill approaches, and undulating greens. With excellent views of the Red Rock Canyon, the Spring Mountain range, and the Las Vegas Valley, the course offers quite a lovely panorama, and overall, a truly pleasant round of golf.
Designed by Arnold Palmer, the course features various well-placed bunkers and elevated greens, which are lush and excellently groomed Tiff-dwarf Bermuda grass. A good variety of holes ranges from long par-3’s to par-5’s with big elevation changes. And four tees offer options for players of varying skills levels. But technical descriptions aside, where Mountain course really succeeds is a nice balance of golf elements and nature, with rugged desert vegetation and plenty of sizeable water hazards. It makes for a peaceful setting that’s not overly stylized, and a game of golf that’s surprisingly challenging at times.
Take, for example, the 15th hole; at first sight, it seems like a straight shot to the green. However, once on the green, players will find a downhill slope that makes sinking the putt no easy feat. The approach is the tricky part on many holes, including a 509-yard par-5 that features a green sheltered by a big bunker on the left and water on the right. A tougher course than its sister course, the Palm, the Mountain Course features more difficult and frequently appearing obstacles as well. The 425-yard ninth hole, for example, features water on the left from tee all the way to the green, as well as a long fairway bunker on the right. However, high handicap golfers will find it thoroughly enjoyable and playable, like most Palmer-designed courses.
After the round, players can enjoy amenities like a golf shop, 12-hole putting course, and a well-equipped practice facility. And the lovely Mediterranean-inspired clubhouse provides a pleasant setting for lounging with friends or having a post-game meal. Besides being one of the most complete golf courses in Nevada, Angel Park also has a polite and friendly staff that will attend to any need. Overall, any golfer will find Mountain Course scenic, challenging, and altogether satisfying.
