Away from the bustle of the Las Vegas Strip, the Red Rock Country Club offers vacationers and residents of Sin City a beautiful community on the southwest edge of Summerlin. The Arnold Palmer-designed Arroyo course features relaxing golf set in the shadows of Red Rock Canyon with the Spring Mountains looming overhead. Players will enjoy a secluded, peaceful, and very playable round where every hole has an unbelievable panorama.
The public Arroyo course is actually composed of six new holes created in 2003; the rest of Arroyo borrows 12 holes from the 27-hole Mountain Course. Aside from the scenic vistas provided by the canyon and mountains, players will enjoy the down-to-earth feel of the course provided by the beautiful homes and immaculate lawns of Red Rock that sit in the background.
The par-72 Arroyo provides an easygoing and relaxing game that corresponds well with its views. Water features and bunkers – almost 100 of them – are scattered throughout the course, but many of them don’t pose a real obstacle and are there more for show than anything else. The bent grass greens are lush and spacious, and holes are significantly shorter than other Vegas courses – Arroyo plays 6,857 yards. Moreover, an unusually wide variety of tees, five on each hole, make the course particularly attractive to beginners.
Arroyo is not without its challenges, however. The par-3 215-yard seventh is a scenic but tricky hole; set amid a view of the city, the hole starts on an elevated tee box leading down to a deep green guarded by two large bunkers and a pond. The 16th hole also demands a strong drive at least 230 yards over a lake. If players clear it, however, they’ll have to contend with a narrow fairway bordered by two bunkers.
Arroyo has its own clubhouse with high quality food and service, and a particularly nice outdoor deck overlooking the course. Eventually, this course will be private, so if you’re a regular golfer in Las Vegas, enjoy the reasonably-priced Arroyo at Red Rock Country Club while you have the chance.
