Now entering its tenth year of business, The Legacy Golf Club in Henderson has developed a little bit of a legacy itself. The golf club, which has been critically acclaimed as one of the best in the Las Vegas area, is certainly worth the trip as a course that not only incorporates its desert surroundings, but uses them to create a game of exceptional golf. The Arthur Hills-designed par-72 layout features lush, rolling fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and speedy greens, all of which contribute to an exciting and challenging game.
Unlike other desert courses, Legacy doesn’t have any breathtaking canyons or unbelievable elevation drops, but the traditional course is known for maintaining perfect conditions, even in the worst of weather. Only two water features (lakes) play into the course, and desert foliage and native grasses offer scenic beauty alongside rugged formations of lava rock and palm trees. The fairways are quite wide, and the roughs are especially rough with thick Bermuda grasses that can get a good hold on a ball. However, the course is generally straightforward – there aren’t too many surprises here.
Still, there’s no shortage of blood-pumping fun at Legacy. The most talked about holes are undoubtedly the 11th, 12th, and 13th, also known as “The Devil’s Triangle” for their triangular formation. This devilish trio begins with a long par-4 that requires an accurate second shot to avoid a pair of sand traps and grass bunkers surrounding the green. Holes 12 and 13 also require accuracy in order to land on elevated greens. Another highlight of Legacy is the 10th hole called “The Suits,” named so for its tee boxes, which are shaped like a heart, diamond, spade, and club.
Players at The Legacy will enjoy amenities like a fully equipped golf shop, a practice facility complete with driving range, putting green, and chipping area, and customized instructional programs. The clubhouse also offers a full service restaurant and bar serving breakfast and lunch every day.
Though The Legacy Golf Club is somewhat overshadowed today by several of Vegas’ newer, more expensive and visually over-the-top golf courses, the course is still holding its own by offering a solid game that delivers when it comes to the basic elements of good golf. As the annual host to a US Open qualifying tournament, Legacy tests even professional players – though golfers of all skill levels will enjoy trying their hand on the 7,233-yard course.
