If she were a real woman, her out-of-this-world proportions would prevent her from being able to stand up straight. But that doesn’t mean that Barbie, who’s turning 50 this year (man, plastic hides age well) doesn’t need a place of her own to stay in when she’s partying in Las Vegas. Technically, the new Barbie suite at the Palms Casino Resort isn’t just for Barbie, but for any guest who needs an infusion of Barbie-print upholstery, white poodle statues, and a whole lot of pink. And in those respects, the suite definitely delivers.
The latest addition to the Palms’ Fantasy Suites, the Barbie Suite offers 2,350 square feet capable of holding up to 50 people and sleeping eight. A collaboration between Mattel and interior designer Jonathan Adler as part of Barbie’s continuing 50th anniversary celebrations, the suite features three bedrooms, an extra-large Jacuzzi, and a two-way fireplace, along with custom art and pieces from the Barbie Loves Jonathan Adler home décor collection.
Among the suite’s furnishings are corseted and skirted lace-up “dress chairs,” custom wall coverings in Barbie’s signature patterns, and a sunburst mirror made from 65 reproduction 1956 black and white swimsuit Barbie dolls. The suite’s color theme is white, black, and bright pink, employed in a very Barbie yet surprisingly modern and chic way. The living room, for example, features a shiny black vinyl couch adorned with bright pink throw pillows. Portraits of Barbie line the white and oh-so-pink walls.
The Barbie Suite is also equipped with a full bar, plasma TVs, a steam shower, Superior sound system, iPod Hi-Fi, Creston controlled TVs and Drapes, and like all Fantasy Suites, great views of the Las Vegas Strip. And for guys who cringingly anticipate being coerced to stay in the Barbie Suite by their significant other, you can relax at least a little – two of the suite’s three bedrooms are decorated in traditional Palms style.
Before they came to the Palms, most of the Barbie Suite’s décor was used to create a real-life Dream House for Barbie in Malibu, where she celebrated her 50th birthday with a star-studded party in March. The full Jonathan Adler’s Barbie Loves Collection, incidentally, will be available in September.
The Barbie Suite replaced the Hot Pink Suite and will be available for a year before it is switched back. The Palms is expecting the Suite to do well with all little girls-at-heart who still remember their early days of brushing Barbie’s long blonde hair and dressing her up in hideous outfits.
“This suite is great for girls of all ages,” said Stephanie Cota, senior vice president of marketing for Barbie. “Moms and daughters, bachelorettes – anyone with an affinity for Barbie will be at home in this suite."
If you’ve always dreamed of living in a Barbie Dream house, the Palm’s Barbie Suite is the next best thing and can be yours for only $4,000 a night. Just don’t expect to see Ken there; he and Barbie broke up in 2004.
