Bette Midler’s premier at the Colosseum was a huge success and tons of celebrities were in the audience to show their support for the seasoned showgirl. Her new show, appropriately titled The Showgirl Must Go On, was a hit and it is clear that Bette has found herself a new home on the Las Vegas stage. Her show is a mix of singing, dancing, comedy, and a few skits and stunts. Her talented showgirls also performed throughout the night creating elaborate dance numbers as well as some of Midler’s famous gags including her Delores Delago (the Mermaid in a wheelchair) skit as well as her representation of Soph, the oldest living showgirl in Vegas.
The Showgirl Must Go On isn’t just funny; it’s visually stunning as well. Her set is completely over the top and she has admitted that this is the highest budget she has ever worked with in any of her stage shows. A larger than life video screen acts as the backdrop for her set. Her show also includes some interesting props like 45-foot tall trees, pink clouds, and curtains made of hundreds of small gold coins. She even has a headdress that weighs over 3,000 lbs. She, of course, does not wear it, but it certainly adds the extravagance of the stage. Bette Midler has said that over the years she has collected so many feathers and sequins that she decided—why not put them all on the same stage?
Midler expects a long run of success. Right now, she is scheduled to perform the show for at least 2 years. Right before Bette’s opening act, she couldn’t fine either of her red shoes, since she didn’t have time to go get a new pair, she was forced to perform her very first number on her very first night barefoot. However, this isn’t a bad thing. The same exact scenario happened to Celine Dion on her first night at Caesars Palace, so Midler considers this a good sign of things to come.
Celebrities lined the red carpet on opening night. Celebrities like: Siegfried and Roy, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone, Ricky Lake, Meatloaf, Rita Rudner, Alan Thicke, Taye Diggs, Jennifer Coolidge, and Nathan Burton were all in attendance for Bette’s big night. Bette continued the party late into the night with an after part at PURE nightclub. At the club, she took the microphone and thanked the crowd for all their support with a champagne toast. Wearing one of her signature silver sequined gowns and a short black blazer over-top; she looked like a million bucks! Her daughter was by her side the entire time to show her support and they were both escorted by bodyguards from the venue to the club. Bette Midler enters the nightclub just as she entered the stage-in style.
Bette Midler developed the show the way she wanted and although Caesars Palace was nervous about Bette filling Celine Dion’s shoes, the president of Caesars Palace, Gary Selesner spoke after the performance about how pleased he was with the show. Telling audience members that he’s sure the hotel has another huge hit on their hands and Caesars Palace will remain number 1 when it comes to entertainment in Las Vegas.
…Break a leg, Bette!
