Las Vegas headliner Bette Midler’s been grabbing a lot of headlines lately. The Caesars Palace performer recently celebrated her 100th show over the weekend at the Colosseum and even had a new dessert added to Serendipity’s menu in honor of the occasion. With sold-out shows week after week, there’s no doubt that Midler has more than enough fame and success to go around – so much so, in fact, that she generously offered to share her spotlight with a celebrity less fortunate…a celebrity on the D-List, you might say.
On Monday night, the Divine Miss M appeared on Kathy Griffin’s season 5 premiere of My Life on the D-List, the two-time Emmy Award-winning reality show. And the result was sheer hilarity, as Griffin visits Midler’s The Showgirl Must Go On and is even recruited to be a part of the show – as a hooker.
Griffin’s cameo in the show, which was taped on stage this past January, appeared during Midler’s Dolores Delgado number, during which the headliner famously comes out as the aging, wheelchair-bound showgirl in full mermaid costume. And you get the sense that, from the smattering of applause Griffin received, the audience didn’t even really believe it was really her on stage.
Griffin came out in full costume and along with Delores, offered some bawdy wit in her usual vulgar style. It must not have suited Midler very well, because the diva offered D-lister some advice: “I have to say, though, the little bit? Not so great.”
Perhaps the funniest part of the episode, however, was seeing the graceful Midler tolerate Griffin’s fast-paced small talk and uncouth questions. As they visit Midler’s gift shop inside Caesars Palace, Griffin tells the headliner, “When I’m around you, I look like I have class – which never happens.” At one point, Griffin even asks Midler whether one of the famous hits she sings on stage, Wind Beneath My Wings, is about flatulence. Needless to say, Midler wasn’t pleased.
The graceful performer took it all with stride, however. When Griffin asks her for advice on how she can get her comedy album, For Your Consideration, a Grammy nomination, the Divine Miss M calls up Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks for advice. It doesn’t really help, but maybe it was just the touch of good luck Griffin needed, since her album really did get nominated at this year’s Grammy. No win, though.
Midler joins a list of A-list celebrities who’ll be helping the red-headed Griffin rise to the top of the Hollywood ranks this season on My Life on the D-List, including Lily Tomlin, Rosie O’Donnell, Christina Aguilera, rapper T.I., and Suzanne Somers.
Basically, they tell me to do the opposite of what I’ve done in the past,” said Griffin. “It’s a story of triumph and regret – triumph for me, regret for them."
