Poking fun mostly at herself, Chelsea Handler has revolutionized the way America views women in the world of stand-up comedy. Chelsea will be performing live in Las Vegas on October 4, 2008 at the Pearl Theater at the Palms Las Vegas. Proving that female comics can be both funny and sexy at the same time, Chelsea Handler uses her strong satirical style to poke fun at topics like celebrities, drinking, drug-use, promiscuity, and laziness. Her act is anything but clean with risqué sexual jokes and adult content. She gained much of her popularity on her talk shows on E! Her first show, The Chelsea Handler Show focused mostly on skits, stand-up, and impersonations. After the show was canceled, E! decided to take a different route with Chelsea and changed the format of her show to a late-night talk show with celebrity guests and interviews. The network re-named her show Chelsea Lately, playing off both the fact that she had been off the air for a while and the fact that the show would be on late at night. Chelsea Lately has become a huge success and has helped propel sales of her new books and her stand-up comedy acts.
Chelsea was raised in Livingston, New Jersey. Her mother was Mormon and her father was Jewish. She has six older siblings and credits much of the ideas for her material to the fact that she grew up in such an unlikely household. Chelsea started out in standup with jokes about her family, celebrities, pop-culture, and gender roles. She often joked about herself claiming that she was promiscuous, a heavy drinker, lazy, and spoiled. She soon landed a spot on the hit show Girls Behaving Badly on the Oxygen network which was hidden camera show where the cast played pranks on average people walking the streets.
Shortly after the fourth season of Girls Behaving Badly came to a close, Chelsea was invited onto the E! network to perform in her own skit-comedy show, The Chelsea Handler Show. Some of her most famous skits include her asking senior citizens what they think of pop culture icons. In most cases the people she interviewed had absolutely no prior knowledge of famous people like Britney Spears and Carrot Top, which made their responses extremely funny. In one skit an older women told Chelsea that Carrot Top looked like, “a very angry woman.” Chelsea Handler also held auditions as she was looking to hire an assistant. Chelsea hired Chuy Bravo, who is an extremely short Mexican-American man. Chelsea pokes fun at him almost all the time, making him do extremely degrading things like wear small clothing or perform activities he is obviously too short for. However, she often refers to him as her “little nugget,” "little Jolly Rancher," and "little carnita taco," but she always reminds the audience that she is only joking and is actually great friends with him.
Chelsea’s new show Chelsea Lately uses a panel of celebrities nightly as she discusses current events in her “round table” discussions. She also interviews celebrities and mixes in some pre-recorded skits on her show nightly show. Her recent book Are you there Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea reached the New York Times Bestseller list. She will be performing live on October 4 at the Pearl Theater. Buy tickets in advance as they are expected to sell out.
