David Spade Hits Las Vegas

Starting out as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, David Spade has finally made his way to Vegas and is headlining in a new show at Planet Hollywood. After starring in several roles on sitcoms as well as being nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Emmy, Spade is going back to his roots and working the standup circuit. Audiences love his witty sarcastic humor which often times includes impressions of some of his signature SNL characters like the Gap girl. Young audiences especially love David Spade as he tries to relate to a hipper audience than some of the older comedians performing in Vegas today.

Spade was the youngest of three sons in Birmingham, Michigan. Soon after his family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, Spade’s father walked out. Spade was a smart child and was even ridiculed for it when he was younger. Spade briefly attended Arizona State where he was part of the Farce Side of Comedy Hour, a campus show where Spade performed standup. Struck by a series of tragedies when both his best friend and stepfather passed away within a short period of time, Spade was determined to go into comedy full-force. He left school and joined Saturday Night Live as both a cast member and a writer. He was one of the youngest comedians on the cast at the time and much of the shows older audience didn’t get his comedy at first. After finding his niche as a duo with partner Chris Farley, Spade started receiving raving reviews from the audience. After leaving SNL, Farley and Spade appeared in several movies together including Black Sheep and Tommy Boy.

Spade was offered a starring role on a new sit-com, Just Shoot Me, which was about the offices of a popular fashion magazine. David Spade played the sarcastic assistant, similar to the role of Dick Clark’s receptionist which he portrayed on SNL. The audience loved the sprinkling of dry humor that Spade brought to the otherwise light comedy of the show. He was nominated for both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his role on the show. After the show ended in 2003, Spade took a role on the family sit-com, 8 Simple Rules. Spade landed his own show, The Showbiz Show in 2005 during which Spade made fun of Hollywood celebrities and talked about recent gossip. Now, with several television and film credits under his belt, Spade has taken to the lights of Sin City and will perform limited nights at the Planet Hollwyood.

Spade appears on stage at the Planet Hollywood wearing casual clothing and speaks to the audience in an informal manor, reminding us more of one of our friends than of a big-name headliner.  On Saturday Night Live his most famous roles included an airline stewardess who only said “buh-bye” as people left and annoyingly would not answer any of their questions. He also was famous for playing Dick Clark’s receptionist who would ask extremely recognizable people, “And you are?” His stand-up act also follows suit with these characters. Spade uses mostly real life situations that he insists have actually happened to him. Spade even goes as far in his act at Planet Hollywood as to joke around that he is using a theater that was designed for another show! His show also pokes fun at many Vegas stereotypes that the audiences are sure to enjoy.  The Planet Hollywood, formerly the Aladdin, has recently re-vamped many of their shows and nightclubs in an attempt to draw in a younger audience.
