Gods of Rock Grace Sin City

When you think of Las Vegas shows today, you probably think of the sexy PEEPSHOW or the Broadway classic Jersey Boys, but at one point in Sin City’s history Las Vegas was home to the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. While hip hop and pop music now reign supreme on the airwaves, there are still places in Las Vegas where rock and roll lives on. The new Hard Rock Cafe just opened up and a million-dollar Elvis Presley exhibit is currently housed at The Imperial Palace. But when it comes to music there’s nothing like going to a live concert to check out your favorite band or performer.

As of late, Sin City has been graced by rock and roll legends performing at spots like the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino’s The Joint as well as Wasted Space. In September they hosted legendary blues and folk rocker Van Morrison. The singer of songs like “Moondance” and “The Garden” performed to a sold out crowd at The Joint, proving that there are still plenty of people in Las Vegas that don’t always need the endless thumping of techno music when looking for a night on the town.

The Doors, sans Jim Morrison of course, performed at Wasted Space. The original guitarist and keyboardist, Robbie Krieger and Ray Manzarek, respectively, were on hand with new lead singer Brett Scallions. If Brett Scallion’s name sounds familiar to you, it’s probably because you may have heard him singing with his former band Fuel, famous for songs like “Shimmer” and “Hemorrhage.” The Doors performed an amazing set list packed with classic songs like “LA Woman,” “Break on Through,” “Light My Fire” and “Roadhouse Blues.”

The crowd at Wasted Space was packed and singing along to the classic songs of the legendary band. It’s always hard to check out bands that continue to tour without their original lead singers. Queen, Journey and Alice in Chains are all examples of bands that have gone on without their legendary singers. Both Queen and Alice in Chains tragically lost their lead singers to disease and drug addiction. Queen’s Freddie Mercury died of AIDS in 1991 and Alice in Chains’ Layne Staley overdosed in 2002. But as they say, the show must go on, and all of these bands continue to tour with new singers much like The Doors have.

Even Bob Dylan was just at The Joint performing hits like “All Along the Watchtower,” “Like a Rolling Stone” and “Jolene.” With rock legends like those, you can see why Las Vegas is a great place for rock concerts. There are plenty of other concerts coming up in the next couple of months, so keep an eye out to see if your favorite band is one of them.
