Larry King is funny. No, really! At least, that’s what Steve Wynn says, and he knows a thing or two about Las Vegas performers, having produced Le Rêve and hired the late Danny Gans, even when everybody said his act was getting dated. Apparently, the grand Steve-o, supposed father of modern-day Las Vegas, is so confident that Larry King is funny that he actually dared the legendary interviewer to perform on stage at the Encore Theatre. Of course, that might just be a cute story cooked up by the hotel’s PR.
For one night only, the magnanimous King will perform at Encore on Friday, June 19, at 8 pm. And no, he won’t be telling knock-knock jokes. King will be recounting tales and anecdotes from his 50-plus years in broadcasting and more than 40,000 interviews, political debates, and topical discussions. The show actually has the potential to be pretty entertaining, as King will recount memories from some of his more notorious guests and legendary experiences.
In case you need reminding, King is the host of CNN’s Larry King Live, the first worldwide phone-in TV talk show. Thanks to his honest and non-confrontational interview approach, the Emmy Award-winner has been dubbed “master of the mike” by TIME magazine and “the most remarkable talk-show host on TV ever” by TV Guide. King has been inducted into five of the country’s leading broadcasting halls of fame, and he’s interviewed every U.S. President since Richard Nixon.
Other notable figures who’ve been queried by King over the years include Tony Blair, Vladimir Putin, Marlon Brando, Johnny Carson, Sammy Davis Jr., Jackie Gleason, Mikhail Gorbachev, Billy Graham, Audrey Hepburn, Bob Hope, L. Ron Hubbard, Michael Jordan, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Madonna, Sir Paul McCartney, Al Pacino, Prince, Eleanor Roosevelt, Pete Rose, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Elizabeth Taylor, Margaret Thatcher, Oprah Winfrey, and Malcolm X.
Incidentally, King’s show at Encore will be opened by Shawn King, a country music vocalist who just so happens to be Larry’s wife. King recently released a new album titled In My Own Backyard on Lofton Creek Records, and she was even scheduled to perform with Gans on stage before he passed away.
Aside from meeting the double-dog dare from Wynn, this special performance will benefit the Larry King Cardiac Foundation. The Foundation provides funding for life saving cardiac procedures for individuals who, due to limited means or no insurance, would be otherwise unable to receive treatment. So there you have it – laughs from one of the most experienced broadcasters in the world, and it’s even for a good cause. In your face, Steve.
