Vegas Icon: Cher

Cher has often been recognized as one of the greatest female pop singers of all time. She is the only female pop artist to produce a top 10 single in every decade of her career and she has been in show business for over 40 years. Coming from a very humble upbringing, Cher remains down-to-earth in attitude but over-the-top in performance style. Cher is currently performing nightly at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Although she has won an Academy Award, Grammy Award, Emmy Award, and even a Golden Globe Award, Cherilyn Sarkissian came from a family of limited means. She was raised by her mother who was even forced to place her in foster care for a period of time because she couldn’t support Cherilyn financially. Her mother eventually remarried and her step-father adopted Cher and provided money for her acting lessons and to help further her career. She dropped out of high school at the age of 16 due to a sever case of undiagnosed dyslexia. Cher became friends and eventually married singer and producer Sonny Bono who helped Cher with her early career in the music business. When she was only 19, they recorded the worldwide hit single “I Got You Babe” as a duet, that reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 list and began Cher’s career that would last a lifetime. The duo really rose to stardom when they created The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour which was a mixture of skits, singing, and celebrity guest spots. They later speared in The Sonny and Cher Show which was an even bigger show and attracted some big celebrity names. Although they were a success together, Sonny and Cher divorced in 1975 and Cher went solo. Cher focused on her acting career performing in movies such as Foxes, Silkwood, and Moonstruck, for which she won an Academy Award. In 1987, Cher produced her first solo success with her self-titled album, Cher which went platinum in the U.S. Unlike many performers, Cher continued her movie and singing careers simultaneously throughout the 1980’s and the 1990’s. In 1998, after the death of Sonny Bono, Cher delivered a eulogy which was aired live on CNN. Soon after, both stars were given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In 1998, Cher entered the world of dance music with her breakthrough album Believe. The album went 4x platinum and was one of her best-selling albums of all time. The album won her several Grammy’s and secured her a spot as an icon not just of the 70’s and 80’s but a modern icon as well. In the spring of 2003, Cher debuted her successful Farewell Tour on NBC. IN 2007, she announced that she would be releasing her twenty-seventh studio album. She is now performing at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace to sold-out audiences nightly. Her fan base reaches people in almost every country and of almost any age, race, or religion. Her famous costumes from throughout her career are on display outside the theater for all to see. Cher has performed in Las Vegas before and loves the town. She even has admitted that she even had a fling with Elvis Presley while once performing together in Las Vegas. However, she said that she rejected him when he asked her to come spend the night in his hotel room. She said later that she regretted this decision.

Cher has long been considered an icon in the gay community and is often impersonated in drag shows across the country. Cher has always been extremely liberal when it comes to political issues, adding to her popularity among gays. She appeared several times on the popular sit-com Will and Grace as she was the idol of some of the gay characters on the show. She has become extremely active politically over the years and has performed at the Democratic Convention, as well. Cher is one of the greatest icons in pop culture and you can see her live nightly at Caesars Palace. Purchase tickets in advance, because they will sell out.
