Well Las Vegans, we can add Liza Minnelli to the list of legends coming to Vegas. Liza will bring five decades’ worth of entertainment to the Hollywood Theatre at the MGM Grand. For one night only Liza will be filming her Tony Award-winning special for future release on DVD in early 2010. Liza performed this very show in New York and decided to come to Vegas to do the same right here in Sin City. She also decided to bring her all-star cast and crew along with her to the Hollywood Theatre to make sure everything is top notch.
The show is going to be a tribute to her godmother, Kay Thompson, who was a legendary singer, dancer and vocal coach with MGM Studios. Liza is the daughter Hollywood icon Judy Garland from The Wizard of Oz and countless other classic films. Liza naturally inherited the talents of her mother, as Liza is one of the few entertainers in Hollywood to have won every major award in show business. Liza has won an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy and four Tony awards. Liza stood out for her role as Sally Bowles in the 1972 film role of “Cabaret” and has had roles in numerous Broadway shows, television series (mostly through cameo) and movies. She is a Broadway icon and a legend in her own right. All of this will be explore in her show: “Liza’s at the Palace!”
“Liza’s at the Palace!” will be directed by Billy Stritch, a composer, singer and renowned pianist. Liza will also have the help of a quartet composed of Cortes Alexander, Jim Caruso, Johnny Rodgers and Tiger Martina who will all recreate the rolls of the Williams Brothers. The Williams Brothers were a quartet of singers in the 1930’s who entertained Americans during the early days of music on the radio. They gained so much popularity singer Kay Thompson (who would then become Liza’s godmother) joined the Williams Brothers to form a popular act that toured nightclubs around the world. At 63, Liza is showing no signs of stopping now. Look for her cameo in the Sex and the City sequel!
As for “Liza’s at the Palace!” she hopes to show the world she’s still got it despite struggles with drugs and health issues. Showbiz is in her blood and in her soul and Liza is ready to show Las Vegas that nothing is going to stop her now.
“I was there before I could walk through the casino — I was too young,” Minnelli told the Las Vegas Sun about her introduction to Vegas. “It was all so mysterious. At five o’clock everybody disappeared from the pool, and at 7:30 out came the dark suits and girls’ best dresses and best jewelry, and it was kind of like they were in on something dangerous. But now, it’s like this marvelous, marvelous Disneyland. Now, honey, I’m leaping over wheelchairs!”
“Liza’s at the Palace!” will be filmed at the Hollywood Theatre at the MGM Grand on September 30th.
