What's COOL!

It may seem like a pretty cool idea to have a lounge in Las Vegas that is made entirely of ice, but building the Minus 5 Lounge in Las Vegas has become quite the task. The first lounge of its kind in Las Vegas, Minus 5 will be an entire nightlife experience complete with parkas, ice sculptures and lots of almost frozen drinks. So what exactly is made of ice? Well, everything. The doors, walls, seats, bar, and even the glasses that hold your drinks will be made of ice. There are already several Minus 5 bars across the globe, but this is the first in the U.S. and bringing this place to the desert was no easy task. Ice blocks were shipped in directly from Canada. Ice sculptors have been working hard to create the décor for the ice lounge, even though all of the sculptors will have to be replaced every six to eight weeks.

Ok, so the temperature inside the ice lounge isn’t really minus 5 degrees Fahrenheit, it’s actually negative 5 degrees Celsius which equals 27 degrees Fahrenheit, so it’s not quite as bad as it seems. Also, Minus 5 will be one of the few bars in Las Vegas that is actually helping the harsh desert environment instead of depleting it. The water used to make the ice glasses will be shipped in from New Zealand in order to help with the water problems in Las Vegas. The owner will also be creating a wedding area where couples will be able to get married in this winter wonderland. Brides will still be required to wear white parkas over their dresses, however. In fact, everyone in the lounge will have gloves, boots, and parkas to help them keep warm.

The Minus 5 Lounge has thought of everything. Even kids will be able to join in the fun during certain hours with mocktails for kids to enjoy if they too want to experience the icy palace. After you’ve had a little too much of the cold, you will be able to step into a separate lounge area that offers comfortable leather couches and a heating system that is cranked up to help ice-cold loungers warm up from the icy situation. The heated area is set up similar to a ski lodge with a masculine outdoorsy feel that is a nice change of pace from the frozen room you just came from. The doors of Minus 5 will open in the Mandalay Place shopping area at Mandalay Bay in September, just in time for the holiday season. While Minus 5 will be the first lounge of its kind in the U.S., many other venues are following closely behind it. The Minus 5 group already has plans to open similar attractions in Miami and Los Angeles.
