Nathan Burton Wins Magic Award

The International Magic Society awarded Nathan Burton the “Merlin Award” this week honoring him as the best comedy illusionist of 2008. This coveted award may come as a surprise considering some of the big name magicians in town to choose from like Penn and Teller and Lance Burton. However, Nathan Burton seems to be moving up in the world of Las Vegas headliners. His recent switch from the V Theater at Planet Hollywood to the Flamingo Showroom will allow him the opportunity for a bigger and better show with more special effects than ever before. This fun-filled 60-minute afternoon show is great for adults or children of all ages. Burton was given the “Merlin Award” presented by Flamingo President, Don Marrandino, on the Flamingo Showroom stage directly following his magic show. After the award was presented Nathan Burton thanked his audience and the Flamingo for allowing him the opportunity to perform.

The International Magic Society is the largest magic organization in the world. The group was founded in 1868 by Toni Hassini who was also on hand this week to present Burton with his award. The “Merlin Award” is the industry equivalent to winning an Oscar. Past winners include top-illusionists like: Siegfried and Roy, Criss Angel, Penn and Teller, and David Copperfield.

Nathan Burton got his start in the magic world on the reality television show America’s Got Talent. Audiences loved his quick wit and mind-blowing illusions. Burton prides himself on keeping his act family-friendly and accessible. His light-hearted humor doesn’t cross the line and allows audiences to focus mostly on his magic. His show also relies heavily on classic Las Vegas flair. Showgirls, dancing, and even some dazzling costumes make Burton’s show one of the most traditionally-styled acts in town. However, these aren’t your grandfather’s magic tricks. Classics are re-structured and re-invented leaving audiences to wonder, “How did he do that?” In one act, Burton performs the classic straight jacket escape but this time he uses a transparent straight jacket. There is no doubt that Burton will play tricks on your eyes and your mind. Audiences will also love Burton’s famous “microwave trick” that has become his signature routine. Burton crams himself into a giant microwave and comes out “burnt” (as well as a different person) as a black co-star steps out of the box. Although this trick is really nothing new, it’s the comedy angle that makes it fun and refreshing.

It seems with so many illusionists on the Strip doing the same tired acts these days; Nathan Burton has found a way to spice it up. Audiences love the comedic twist on these classic Las Vegas acts and the adorable showgirls in skimpy costumes don’t hurt either. Tickets for Nathan Burton Comedy Magic at the Flamingo are on sale now.
