Phantom – The Las Vegas Spectacular at The Venetian is about to disappear… for good this time. The Las Vegas production announced earlier this month it will be closing its curtains forever on September 2, 2012. "All involved are very proud of the success that Phantom has achieved here in Las Vegas at The Venetian," says Scott Zeiger, co-CEO of BASE Entertainment, the show's co-producer. "Since opening night, critics and fans alike have recognized this production of Phantom is unlike any they have ever seen, or will ever see again. We've had a triumphant run by any measure." The stunning 95-minute theatrical production created specifically for Las Vegas provided guests and fans with an incredible experience never before seen in a theater, not even on Broadway. While the production mimics that of the original Phantom of the Opera, including every Andrew Lloyd Webber song, Phantom – the Las Vegas Spectacular added its own special effects and enhancements, creating an entirely new Las Vegas show. The show played to nearly 2,700 audiences over 6 years in a customized, $40 million theater that looks surprisingly like the Paris Opera House from the original production. And by the time the curtain closes on September 2, 2012 after the 7:00 p.m. performance it will have “crashed” the $5 million chandelier the distance equal to six times the height of Mount Everest; there will have been more than 130,000 romantic kisses between Christine Daae, Raoul and “The Phantom”; the crew will have done 35,000 elaborate set changes; undergone 600,000 special effects and more in the spectacular time it was on the Strip. It seems The Venetian is going through some show changes these days. “Phantom” is the third show to announce its departure from the Las Vegas hotel and its sister property, Palazzo, in the past year. Jersey Boys has already closed at the Palazzo and will re-open at the Paris in March while Blue Man Group is leaving the Palazzo for Monte Carlo this fall. There’s no word yet on why “Phantom” is closing or what will replace it but like any empty space in Vegas it won’t be empty forever and whatever replaces it is sure to be amazing! You still have time to catch one more performance of Phantom – the Las Vegas Spectacular before it closes in September. Get tickets today for Phantom of the Opera – The Las Vegas Spectacular!
