Traveling With Pets

Everyone knows Las Vegas is an adult playground. Yet, it’s almost never discussed what Vegas has to offer for our pets. Although Las Vegas is not the most pet-friendly city in the world, there are a few select hotels on the Strip that allow pets.

If traveling with your pet, it is probably a good idea to rent a car. Some taxi companies may not allow pets. It is also a good idea to get a crate for you pet; many places are more likely to allow you to bring the pet if it’s in a crate and some hotels require that you leave the pet in the crate when you are away from your hotel room.

One of the nicest hotels on the Strip, happens to be pet-friendly. The Four Seasons allows pets that weigh less than 25 lbs. However, you are not allowed to leave your pet in the room unattended and there may be certain fees applied, especially if the pet does any damage to the guest room. Four Seasons is the best choice for keeping a pet on the Strip.

Another less expensive option is the Circus Land RV Park at Circus Circus. The property allows pets in the RV Park, but not in the hotel. The RV park is also a great place to stay when traveling with young children and Circus Circus is a favorite among young Vegas travelers because there are tons of kid-friendly activities available inside the hotel.

If traveling to Las Vegas by car, you may want to make several stops so your pet can be walked and so the pet doesn’t get motion sickness from the long ride. Make sure to bring paper towels in the car, just in case. Many airlines will also require that your pet not eat anything directly before the trip. Also, once you arrive at your destination, give your pet plenty of time to adapt to its surroundings. Make sure the pet feels comfortable before leaving it alone. Some pets may be disturbed by loud noises so make sure that the hotel you are staying at is quiet. Things like loud construction can sometimes cause damage to your pet’s eardrums. Make sure your pet’s tags and shots are up-to-date before leaving on any trip. It is also a good idea to get your pet an extra identification tag which has a cell phone number on it, in case your pet wonders off while vacationing. It is also a good idea to put the do-not-disturb sign on the door when your pet is in the room alone. Housekeepers may be startled or even upset your pet if they come into the room when you are not there.

If you don’t mind staying Off-Strip, the Residence Inn offers suites with full kitchens that also allow pets. If you’re staying in the Lake Las Vegas area, Red Rock Inn and Green Valley Ranch are great luxury resort options. However, you should notify your hotel if you plan on bringing a pet even if pets are allowed in the hotel; a surprise pet fee could ruin your vacation if you aren’t prepared. Also, check with your airline to see the specific weight limits and fees associated with carrying a pet on your flight.
