It’s been nearly 10 years since Canadian songstress Celine Dion graced The Colosseum at Caesars Palace with her award-winning voice and extraordinary stage presence. And in that time she’s broke, no destroyed box office records, stunned with her incredible vocals and had a theater built and named after her.
No one could have imagined (in fact most believed it was a gamble due to the Iraq War and the possible tourist turndown in Las Vegas at the time) but on March 25, 2003 Celine captivated an audience that included Las Vegas entertainers and regulars Siegfried & Roy, Dick Clark, Justin Timberlake, Alan Thicke, Kathy Griffin, and David Foster with her new show “A New Day.” During that initial concert Celine received her first standing ovation in Las Vegas, a gesture that would be repeated nightly as she belted out her biggest hits over the next four years.
“A New Day” was an instant success. The show routinely sold out until its end in 2007. It was also the sixth biggest selling tour in America in 2006. Due to that great success, the “A New Day” was extended into 2007. In total The Caesars Palace production grossed $400 million, and was seen by nearly 3 million people!
In a recent interview an AEG spokesman said of the start of Celine’s “A New Day” show: “No one could have envisioned how the show and venue would forever raise the bar for Las Vegas entertainment and how it would set the stage for the biggest entertainers in the world to call The Colosseum and Las Vegas home.”
But it has and its even lured Celine back for her second residency at Caesars Palace - a three-year, 70 show a year deal. The new show kicked off on March 15, 2011 and has proved to be just as spectacular as “A New Day” if not more so. Celine is about to start the third year of her three-year residency and just recently agreed to a two-year contract extension. When that is complete, the incredible artists will have celebrated 10 years of shows in The Colosseum.
In honor of her impact on The Entertainment Capital of the World, the theater Celine now performs in was built for her and her artistic vision. When it’s been 10 years, I wonder what else Las Vegas will do to commemorate Celine’s time on the Strip.
