Cirque du Soleil brings Zarkana to Aria Las Vegas!
The time has come for The King to leave the building once and for all. It was reported last month that Cirque du Soleil’s “Viva Elvis” at Aria will hang up its blue suede shoes forever on Aug. 18 and a new Cirque show Zarkana will take its place with a soft opening on Oct. 25 and a more formal premiere on Nov. 8.

While Zarkana may be new to the Strip, the show is no stranger to the rest of the country. The modern rock opera has already been seen by 1 million people not including its upcoming run this year at Radio City Music Hall in New York. The elaborate production has also captivated the world with 550,000 tickets sold in Madrid, Spain and 330,000 tickets sold at its current location at the Kremlin Theater in Russia.

Besides its mysterious plot infused with incredible acrobatics that make it perfect for the Vegas scene, Zarkana also seems to be a perfect match for the MGM property as the Aria Theater will not have to be remodeled to fit the show’s current requirements. The production was chosen over Cirque’s other successful show “Zed,” which closed in Tokyo due to the recent earthquake that destroyed the tourist economy. In the end, Cirque president and chief executive officer Daniel Lamarre believed “Zed” was “a little bit too traditional and not distinctive enough for this market.” But Zarkana on the other hand seems to have all of the elements for a hit Las Vegas show.

Getting its name from the fusion of the words “bizarre” and “arcane”, Zarkana refers to the strange aura and atmosphere of the place and its inhabitants. The Cirque du Soleil website describes Zarkana as an acrobatic rock opera that follows Zark, a magician who has lost his powers and the love of his life. In his quest to rediscover them both he encounters an abandoned theater filled with off-the-wall characters, mutants, sinister sirens and more, all of which are determined to divert him from his quest.

Zarkana’s cast of 75 international artists transports the audience into a fantastical and suspenseful world, where it’s hard to tell the real from the imaginary. In true Cirque fashion Zarkana blends circus acts with the surreal for an over-the-top acrobatic spectacular you won’t want to miss.

Stay tuned for more details on Zarkana’s new home at Aria. In the meantime if you’re an Elvis Presley fan you can still catch Cirque’s Viva Elvis! production until Aug. 18 with discounted tickets right here on Best of Vegas.
