Earth Day 2012 in Las Vegas
|
Earth Day is all about increasing awareness and appreciation of the Earth’s natural environment. This year’s Earth Day theme is “Mobilize the Earth" and it’s a call to action for growing the environmental movement. Las Vegas is doing their part and spreading the awareness with several Earth Day events and ways to go and stay green.
Do your part and reduce your carbon footprint by skipping the cab and opting for a walk this Earth Day. Walking is a great way to see the city anyway and on Earth Day it should be the only way to travel. If you’re not up for or can’t walk to every destination you can always use the Las Vegas monorail. The electric, zero-emissions transportation system is the next best thing from walking and just another exciting thing to experience in Vegas.
While you’re out and about walking the Strip, make sure to stop and check out Las Vegas’ greenest buildings. CityCenter Las Vegas has become one of the largest LEED certified projects in the world. Within the complex sits several towers, with hotels including Aria Resort’s hotel tower, which has received the highest level of recognition, 5 Green Keys, from the Green Key Eco-Rating Program, the largest international program evaluating sustainable hotel operations.
But it’s the Palazzo Las Vegas that really has the green community talking. The Department of Energy recently presented the Palazzo with “The Energy Innovator’s Award” which recognizes business, individuals and governmental agencies that have developed energy-efficient technologies, services or policies. And to boot, the Palazzo is the largest LEED-certified building in the world!
While you’re doing your part to conserve energy, Las Vegas hotels and casinos will be doing theirs by going dark on Saturday, April 21 for the annual Earth Hour. That’s right, for one hour on Saturday, dozens of Strip and downtown properties including Caesars Palace, Paris Las Vegas, Planet Hollywood, the Rio, MGM Grand, Excalibur, Luxor and Mandalay Bay will power down in observance for Earth Day. In addition many of the properties will display an Earth Hour logo to generate awareness of the event.
If you’re idea of celebrating Earth Day has you off the Strip and surrounded by nature you might enjoy the Pink Jeep Tour - Red Rock National Convention Area. The tour takes you on a scenic journey through the canyon with incredible views of nature and its wildlife. Or visit the Hoover Dam with the Hoover Dam City Deluxe Tour by Airbridge, its hydroelectric power delivers clean energy to Las Vegas.
LBS Burger Joint at Red Rock Resort will celebrate Earth Day with a special Urth Burger. For every Urth Burger ordered on Earth Day, proceeds will go to Las Vegas’ nature-centered attraction, Springs Preserve. The burger is made of a house-made vegan patty topped with fresh tomato, lettuce, cucumber, sprouts and avocado slices. You can also order the burger on the strip at Holstein’s at the Cosmopolitan and Pink’s Hot Dogs at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. Saving the Earth never tasted so good!
Happy Earth Day!
