Mainstream Vegas: Jay Leno Cuts Salary In Half To Save Jobs

For the past 18 years Jay Leno has been the face of late-night television. Known for his big chin and even bigger comedic persona, Jay Leno entertains the masses as he jokes his way into the homes of millions of Americans each and every night. Laughing with and interviewing some of the biggest celebrities such as Hugh Grant, Tom Cruise, Miley Cyrus, Betty White and many, many more, Jay Leno is a titan in the industry. And on Friday, Oct. 12 and Saturday, Oct. 13 you can experience Leno’s wit live at his stand-up routine at the Mirage!

The funny man has been making headlines of late for willingly taking a 50% pay cut as part of NBC’s budget-chopping effort. NBC has said that Leno’s salary has now dropped to around $15 million, which ultimately has helped NBC slash the show’s $100 million annual budget by 20%. No joke! Opting for a salary cut made it possible for some of the crew in jeopardy of the budget cuts to keep their jobs, which seems they will keep having for another two more years, as Leno has extended his contract until May 2014. Talk about a stand-up guy!

Before Leno was slicing his salary in half, he was building his stand-up career, working over 300 nights a year in nightclubs before hitting it big in 1992 with his very own late-night talk show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. But before Leno introduced “Jay Walking” and “Headliners,” he tried his talents at acting starring in a few films such as American Hot Wax in 1978. Leno even broke records, appearing on his future arch rivals late-night show, Late Night with David Letterman, numerous times.

Leno became a regular face on TV when he served as Johnny Carson’s permanent guest host on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. After Carson’s retirement, anticipation grew over which funny man was right for Carson’s replacement. And with Leno’s charisma and knowledge of the show he eventually won over NBC and has been hosting The Tonight Show ever since, taking a brief break in 2010.

In that time, Leno’s late night show was named the Best Loved stars in Hollywood by a TV Guide, received 4 Emmy Nominations and The Tonight Show’s technical/floor crew has own the Emmy for technical excellence. He was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame earlier this year.

Don’t miss Jay Leno and what’s sure to be a hilarious weekend of laughs on Friday, Oct. 12 and Saturday, Oct. 13 with discounted tickets right here on Best of Vegas.
