He just may be the funniest guy you don’t know. Risqué comedian, Russell Peters is comedy’s newest sensation and he is about to show Las Vegas what he’s made of. The controversial and downright hilarious comic is coming to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace this Saturday, May 26 for a one-night only show.
Ranked by Forbes as one of the top ten highest grossing comics in the U.S. in 2009 and 2010, (Peters has reportedly earned an estimated $15 million between 2009 and 2010, up from $5 million in 2008) Peters certainly seems to be doing something right, even if you aren’t familiar with his name. You might recognize Peters’ face from "The Green Card Tour LIVE from the O2 Arena" on Showtime and "Red, White and Brown" on Comedy Central. He’s also performed for the troops in Afghanistan, Iraq and on the USS Eisenhower and appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Lopez Tonight," "Jimmy Kimmel Live," "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" and HBO, CNN, MTV and the BBC.
Peters began his career in Toronto in 1989 but it wasn’t until a performance he did on the Canadian TV series Comedy Now that went viral on YouTube that really launched the comic into stardom. Since then, Peters has gone on to shatter attendance and sales records for several of his shows including becoming the first comedian to sell out Toronto’s Air Canada Centre and breaking Australian history with an audience of 13,800, making it the largest stand-up comedy show ever in the land down under. In the UK, Peters broke comedy sales records at London’s O2 Arena when he sold over 16,000 tickets to a show in 2009 and he’s about to break records again, this time in Las Vegas, when he comes to Caesars Palace this Saturday night.
So what is it about Peters comedic style that has people flocking to his stand-up routines across the globe? Being of Indian decent, Peters uses observational humor to highlight racial, ethnic, class and cultural stereotypes. His material is sharp and so is his tongue as he is one of the few comedians today who has the guts to say what others won’t dare. Peters pokes fun at the idiosyncrasies of our culture, even making fun of his own childhood growing up in an Indian family.
