It was a night of glitz, glamour and bikinis as 89 contestants from nearly 90 countries and territories around the world competed in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and personality interview for the title of Miss Universe 2013 at Planet Hollywood last night. In the end 2012 Miss USA 20-year-old Olivia Culpo of Rhode Island beat out her gorgeous peers and was crowned Miss Universe 2013. This was the first time since 1997 that Miss USA won the title of Miss Universe.
Hosting last nights pageant was Andy Cohen, of Bravo’s “Watch What Happens: Live” and Giuliana Rancic, co-anchor of “E! News.” Jeannie Mai of Style Network’s “How Do I Look” provided the behind-the-scenes commentary and three-time Grammy-Award winning band, Train and Australian singing and dancing sensation, Tomomatic also performed during the live broadcast.
Judges included Two-Time World Series Champion and MVP with the San Francisco Giants, Pablo Sandoval; photographer and host of Oxygen’s The Face, Nigel Barker; singer and actor, Diego Boneta; “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star Scott Disick; star of Bravo’s It’s a Brad, Brad World, Brad Goreski; Award-Winning Chef, Chef Masaharu Morimoto; Miss Universe 2010 Ximena Navarrete; TV & radio personality Claudia Jordan; three-time US Olympic Gold Medalist, Kerri Walsh Jennings; and star on Bravo’s hit series “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” Lisa Vanderpump.
Walking the red carpet prior to the pageant was former Peepshow at Planet Hollywood starlet Holly Madison, hotel mogul Donald Trump, Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes and Miss Teen USA 2012 Logan West.
The First Runner-Up was Miss Universe Philippines, Janine Tugonon who will assume the duties of Miss Universe 2012 if for some reason Capulo cannot fulfill her responsibilities. Second Runner-Up was Miss Universe Venezuela, Irene Sofiá Esser Quintero and the top five included: Miss Universe Australia, Renae Ayris and Miss Universe Brazil, Gabriela Markus.
The Photogenic Universe Award went to Miss Universe Kosovo, Diana Avdiu. Avdiu was chosen by an expert panel who thought she best exemplified beauty through the lens of a camera. She was awarded a $1,000 cash prize and a gift from pageant sponsor Diamond Nexus Labs.
And the Miss Congeniality Universe Award went to Miss Universe Guatemala, Laura Godoy Calle. The contestant’s peers actually voted for her as the most congenial, charismatic and inspirational participant. She was awarded a $1,000 cash prize and a gift from Diamond Nexus Labs.
