What to do in Las Vegas in August 2012

Even with school starting and summer vacations ending, The Entertainment Capital of the World is still going strong this month. From concerts and comedians to food and fashion, August in Las Vegas is crazy busy. Here’s what’s happening in Las Vegas in August:

Comedians
Jay Leno and Tim Allen have been on quite the successful comedic roll in Las Vegas lately. And this August Leno and Allen will return to the Strip for one more round of humor with Allen kicking it off on Friday, August 3 and Saturday, August 4 at the Venetian Showroom and Leno rounding out the month with a laugh on Friday, August 31 at 10:00 p.m. at the Mirage.

Star Trek
Trekkers unite as the Star Trek Convention will make its “trek” to the Rio on Thursday, August 9 through Sunday, August 12. Fans should get ready for some big Star Trek names like William Shatner and nearly anyone else you’d like to meet from Star Trek shows and films as they make special appearances. There will also be auctions, contests, parades, parties and autograph sessions.

Food
Beginning on Saturday, August 25, foodies will be able to indulge in Carnival of Cuisine during Wine and Food Month (Mese di Vino e Cucina) at the annual Carnevale event at the Venetian and the Palazzo. Mese di Vino e Cucina will offer wine tastings from top winemakers while chefs will show off their talents in the kitchen in cooking demonstrations and meet and greets.

Then on Monday, August 27, take a bite out of the 6th annual Three Square’s Fall Las Vegas Restaurant Week and enjoy some of Las Vegas’ tastiest restaurants with a 3-course menu with fixed pricing. A portion of the proceeds will go to Three Square to help end hunger in the valley. Fall Las Vegas Restaurant Week runs through Sunday, Sept. 2.

Anniversaries/ Openings
After 30 successful years entertaining in Las Vegas, the longest running show on the Strip, Don Arden’s Jubilee! at Bally’s just got longer as it celebrated it’s 31st anniversary on July 31. You can join Jubilee in celebrating their third decade with tickets right here on Best of Vegas.

Blue Man Group will also be celebrating this month as they search for their newest character, Showbot. The first female character to the show, Showbot will make her half human, half robotic debut when the Las Vegas show makes its move to the Monte Carlo on October 10. In the meantime, any lady interested in trying out for the character should meet at the Monte Carlo on August 9 at 10 a.m.

While not a new show or new character, the Hard Rock Hotel will be opening a new hotspot to experience live music in the intimate entertainment venue called Vinyl.

Fairwell
Just as one show celebrates an anniversary, another says goodbye. August is the last month you’ll be able to “get all shook up” with Cirque du Soleil’s Viva Elvis at Aria. The Elvis Presley tribute show ends its Las Vegas run on August 31. The new Cirque spectacular Zarkana will take Viva Elvis’ place in October.

This is also the last full month of Phantom – The Las Vegas Spectacular at the Venetian. The 90-minute Phantom of the Opera recreation will say goodbye to Vegas forever on Sept. 2. You can see either show one last time with discounted tickets right here on Best of Vegas.

Fashion
Step out in style this month as Fashion Night Out Las Vegas returns to the Strip. The event offers incredible deals on the latest fashions as well as wine tastings, makeovers and much more. Fashion Night Out will officially kick off on Sept. 6 but if you’re interested we recommend you get to town early to enjoy some of Las Vegas’ other fun.

Music
You can’t go long without seeing a concert in Las Vegas and this month is no different as Las Vegas headliners return and some new acts roll in. Celine Dion returns to her residency at Caesars Palace on Wednesday, August 1 for a concert that is jam-packed with the songs that made her famous. On Saturday, August 4, Weird Al Yankovic will bring his hilarious parody songs to The Club at Cannery Casino & Hotel for a “concert” that is sure to make you giggle. Crooner Tony Bennett will end August and begin September with a concert on September 1 at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. The brother-and-sister duo Donny and Marie will return to the Flamingo on August 28 with their award-winning variety show. The show features live music, singing and dancing for a performance you wont’ forget.

Meet and Greet Criss Angel
Illusionist fans will be able to meet the Magician of the Century and “Believe” star Criss Angel in an exclusive meet and greet opportunity on Saturday, August 11 after his 9:30 performance of “Believe.”
