True Las Vegas fans will continuously refer to the Planet Hollywood as the Aladdin. Although given a complete face lift, some still insist that the memory of the Aladdin will never diminish; no matter how many coats of paint are used to cover it up. The Aladdin was purchased by the Planet Hollywood restaurant chain in 2005 and it was soon announced that the hotel would undergo major renovations adding a much more contemporary look and taking away much of the Arabian theme. However, most people did not realize that the hotel itself would not close shop for even a day.
Within months a new sign was placed on top of the building and since April of 2007, the hotel officially changed its name from the Aladdin to Planet Hollywood. However, it’s proven true that you can’t teach an old Vegas new tricks. People still insisted on calling it the Aladdin no matter how much the owners of the hotel discouraged it. It is understandable why people are hanging on to the idea of the out-dated Aladdin. The hotel truly was a piece of Las Vegas history. Pop icon Elvis Presley was married in the chapel at the Aladdin.
With tons of new interior spaces and a brand new façade, the Planet Hollywood help its official grand opening in November of 2007. The lobby was polished and sparkling with LCD lights as the main attraction throughout. Large screens lit up the Strip from the outside. Large chandeliers hung from floor to ceiling and changed colors frequently. The rooms were renovated with new movie themes. The Desert Passage Mall was re-named the Miracle Mile Shops and given a new contemporary mall look. New nightclubs and restaurants were put in place and new shows were geared more toward a younger audience. Although some still refuse to call it by its new name, there is no question that the Aladdin has changed for the better and a whole new generation of Vegas visitors is now populating this iconic Las Vegas hotel.
