It’s a true “rags to riches” story. Alfonzo Jones, otherwise known as “Turf” first came into the public’s eye when he took the stage on “America’s Got Talent” blowing away the audience, including judge Howard Stern with his incredible blend of contortions and robotic dance moves to the Black Eyed Peas “Boom Boom Pow.” What came after the standing ovation was a sad admittance that “Turf” was a homeless street performer. His mother had kicked him out because he wanted to follow his dream of becoming a dancer.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the house after “Turf” told his story and he was immediately approved to go on to Vegas and continue competing in the show. Once at Vegas, “Turf” continued his contortionist moves to Lil Wayne’s “I Am Not a Human Being,” which lead him to the quarterfinals, where he found more success dancing to Black Eyed Peas “Imma Be.” That performance landed “Turf” at the semifinals, where unfortunately his “America’s Got Talent” journey ended, but not his street performance.
Despite his homeless situation, “Turf’s” elimination from “America’s Got Talent” didn’t deter him from doing what he loves. So he set up a spot in front of Bally’s and began wowing passersby with his outrageous moves. Eventually he got the attention of talent agent Mike Young. Young asked “Turf” if he could be his manager. “Turf” agreed and he was immediately introduced to magician Nathan Burton who was looking to mentor a young performer. Unfortunately Burton passed on “Turf” but juggler Jeff Civillico found “Turf” to be just what his show needed.
After Civillico included “Turf” in one of his benefit events, he struck a deal with the contortionist dancer and the two partnered as opener and headliner. And what a match they are!
“He’s such an awesome opener because he wakes people up,” Civillico says. “That’s what you want at 2 in the afternoon when people come in with this glaze over their faces. You can’t watch him and not go, ‘Oh, my GAAAAWD!’”
Both “Turf” and Civillico offer a unique set of skills that you really can’t find outside of the Strip. But both are fascinating to watch and together make up one unbelievable, heart-pounding show.
