The famed Las Vegas Strip is a vacation destination for millions each year. People travel from around the world to experience the fast and flashy fun that Las Vegas has to offer. But there’s much more to Las Vegas than the whirlwind of the strip, especially for families visiting the area. Heading off the strip can lead you to spectacular adventures and the opportunity to make unique memories with your family.

The Lion Habitat Ranch
Just minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, the Lion Habitat Ranch houses and cares for the original MGM lions. This 8.5-acre ranch is home to 40 lions, and allows visitors to watch the lion roaming and interacting with each other and their cubs. Check the daily schedule to time your visit around a feeding. Plus, don’t forget to visit Ozzie, the artistic giraffe!

What to Expect:
The Lion Habitat Ranch is an outdoor experience and operations can be stopped due to rain or other inclement weather. Prepare for your visit with appropriate clothing, walking shoes, plenty of water, and of course a camera. Strollers are acceptable but expect non-paved terrain. (Adults 15+ require a ticket. Tickets include 1 child ages 4-14. Children 3 and younger are free.)

Red Rock Canyon
The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area is located to the west of Las Vegas and features more than 195,000 acres of geologic wonder inside the Mojave Desert. With more than 26 hiking trails, a one-way 13-mile scenic drive, camping, wildlife, visitors center and exhibits there is something for everyone in your family to enjoy.

Take advantage of programs offered for the kids, including indoor and outdoor exhibits and the Junior Ranger Program. You can download the Red Rock Canyon Discovery Book in advance, too.

What to Expect:
Dress for the weather and bring plenty of water. The scenic drive is 13 miles long and goes very slowly with plenty of stop to get out and explore along the way. If you plan to hike, check trail information in advance, and be prepared for the terrain and weather.

Camel Safari
A new adventure in the Las Vegas area is Camel Safari. With more than 50 animals to meet, this is an adventure you don’t want to miss. Camel Safari is a 176-acre farm located at the base of the Virgin Mountains in Mesquite, NV, about 75 minutes outside of Las Vegas. Camel Safari offers a variety of experiences to fit the needs of any family. Plan your adventure here.

What to Expect:
Camel Safari is located just outside of Mesquite, NV, an easy drive on Interstate 15. The City of Mesquite offers additional fun including casinos, hotels, restaurants and retail outlets.

Pinball Hall of Fame
If you’re looking for some laid back, old school gaming fun, the Pinball Hall of Fame needs to be on your list. The largest collection of pinball machines is located just minutes from the Las Vegas strip and includes games that range in age from the 1950s to the 1990s. There are no tickets or redemption prizes at the Pinball Hall of Fame, just a lot of old-fashioned fun.
Most game play costs 50 cents but be prepared with various coins because no one can pass up the penny gumball machine. The Pinball Hall of Fame is well equipped for kids of all sizes, offering stools for smaller children to use while playing the games.

What to Expect:
The Pinball Hall of Fame is a non-profit, and exists purely for the enjoyment of the games. It’s not fancy and doesn’t want to be, but it offers one of the best family arcade experiences you can find. Food and beverages are available in vending machines, including a bag of popcorn for 25 cents. Change machines are available as well. Be respectful of the machines while enjoying them.

Boulder City
About 30 minutes Southeast of Las Vegas is the little town of Boulder City. Built to house the workers that built the Hoover Dam, Boulder City is a historic scrapbook that offers lots of adventures. Take a ride on the rails that helped build the Hoover Dam, tour the Hoover Dam, Kayak over a ghost town in a glass-bottom boat, visit Bighorn Sheep at Hemenway Valley Park, cruise Lake Mead or even fly across Bootleg Canyon.
Enjoy everything Boulder City has to offer with a stop for a bite to eat at any of the well-loved restaurants including the Coffee Cup, Fox Smokehouse BBQ, Chilly Jillyz and more.
