Three-time Grammy Award winner, Gwen Stefani kicked off her residency, Gwen Stefani: Just a Girl at Zappos Theatre inside Planet Hollywood on June 27. The night included giant bananas, glitzy costumes and some throwback tunes. Here are the 5 best you’ll hear:
We’d be shocked if Gwen didn’t perform her hit song “Hollaback Girl.” In fact, we can’t fathom a concert of hers without it. The song sets the tone for Gwen’s solo career and one we all need to hear now and again. Plus, it taught us how to spell bananas in a fun, dance sort of way!
Just A Girl
The title of the show and Gwen’s own personal anthem, “Just A Girl” is a No Doubt favorite for us. The song helped the band break into the mainstream, peaking at number 23 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It was Gwen’s first time at writing all the lyrics. And we of course love it for its feminist undertones.
“Cool” is off Gwen’s debut solo album Love. Angel. Music. Baby. The song, which tells the story of two lovers who have separated but remain “cool” as friends, does an incredible job showing off her vocal ranges. The song’s musical style was also inspired by synth-pop and new wave arrangements from the 1980’s, which we think is pretty “cool.”
The Sweet Escape featuring Akon
The 2006 song is one of Gwen’s catchiest tunes. It comes from her second record called The Sweet Escape. While it’s much gentler than her other songs, we still get that upbeat tempo she’s made us love as well as hear her amazing voice.
This No Doubt hit is easily one of our favorite songs from both the band and Gwen’s solo career. Not her happiest song, “Don’t Speak” talks about the breakup of her bandmate boyfriend. You can feel the pain of the breakup through the lyrics, making us remember our own first loves.
Gwen will perform her show through March of 2019. You can find discounted tickets to Just a Girl here on Best of Vegas.
